ABOUT THIS SITE & DISCLAIMER

About this site. Jersey Weather Chat is a community run by volunteers who love weather. This site pulls together public data and computer forecast models so islanders can see what’s coming and make their own decisions. It’s free, it always will be, and nobody’s paid to do it.

A few things to know before relying on it

  • Forecasts are predictions, not facts. They change with every update and are often wrong about timing and strength several days out. That’s why we show several models side by side — so you can see how much they agree before you decide.
  • This is not the official forecast or warning service. The authority for Jersey is Jersey Met (gov.je). Always check their warnings and follow official advice; if we and they disagree, trust Jersey Met.
  • We post about storms because the models show one — not to alarm anyone. We know Ciarán and Goretti left a mark. A storm that fizzles is good news, and we’ll say so. Please don’t shoot the messenger.
  • Use at your own risk. The site, its data and the Facebook group are provided “as is”. We can’t accept responsibility for decisions you make or any loss or damage arising from using them — boats, travel, outdoor work, events, property or anything else.
  • The data isn’t ours. It comes from NOAA, Open-Meteo, Jersey Met, USGS, EMSC, Weather Underground and others, and can be late, incomplete or wrong. The site itself may go down, usually at the worst moment.
  • Storm reports are from members and are not verified.
  • In an emergency call 999.

CAPE ?
--J/kg
—
CAPE · Convective Available Potential Energy
The fuel available for a thunderstorm's updraft. Higher values mean more energy is available for storms to grow explosively.
0100025004000+
LIFTED INDEX (LI) ?
--°C
—
Lifted Index · Atmospheric Stability
Compares a rising air parcel to its surroundings. Positive = stable air, storms unlikely. Negative = unstable air, storms more likely — the more negative, the greater the risk.
-10 (unstable)+5 (stable)
DEW POINT (DP) ?
--°C
—
Dew Point · Moisture in the Air
The temperature air must cool to for moisture to condense. Higher dew points mean muggier air and more fuel for storms — below 12°C is dry, above 18°C is humid/muggy.
0° dry25° muggy
CONVECTIVE INHIBITION (CIN) ?
--J/kg
—
CIN · The "Lid" on Storm Formation
A cap that suppresses storms even when CAPE is present. Near zero means little to no cap — storms can form freely. Very negative means a strong cap holding storms down.
-200 (capped)0 (no cap)

WHAT AM I LOOKING AT? A computer forecast from NOAA (the US weather service), played forward through time. Press PLAY LOOP and watch the storms drift across the Atlantic. The swirls of tightly packed pressure lines are the storms — the closer the lines, the windier it gets. Shaded areas show where rain is forecast. Drag the slider to stop on any moment. Tap the chart to open it full size.
The further ahead you look, the less certain it is. This is a US model showing the big picture; for Jersey detail, use the forecast above and Jersey Met warnings.

HOW TO READ THIS MAP
WHERE THE DATA COMES FROM: the box in the top-left corner of the map shows the model (NOAA’s American GFS), which run it is — runs start at 00, 06, 12 and 18 UTC (“Z”) and take a few hours to compute — and roughly when the next one will reach this map. Each new run can shift a storm’s track and strength, so it is worth checking back after an update.
HOW TO READ THIS MAP: the map is fixed on the area that matters to Jersey — Ireland and the Western Approaches across to the Low Countries, Biscay up to Scotland. The colours are NOAA's forecast wind at 10 metres above the ground at the chosen time (gusts or average wind, key below the map), and the thin white lines are isobars — equal sea-level pressure every 2 hPa, bolder every 10 — the closer together they are, the stronger the wind. Each glowing line is the forecast path of a storm centre (a low) over the next 10 days: the dots are every 12 hours, the number beside each is its pressure in hPa (the lower, the stronger), and the larger marker is where the centre is at the chosen time. Tap a number in the row of hours to jump to that time — it is the same NOAA GFS run as the big charts on Wetterzentrale and elsewhere, so the hours match. Tap or click anywhere on the map for the gust, average wind, direction and pressure at that spot. The map is NOAA's 15-mile grid, so it shows the broad pattern; gusts on exposed headlands can be stronger.
THE BOX BELOW THE MAP: Jersey's own wind forecast from several models at once, shown as a range — when the models agree the range is narrow, and when they are more than 15 mph apart the box says so. “Strongest spell” is the best 3-hour spell in each model, not a single hour, so one freak hour in one model cannot become the headline.
NAMES: every storm gets a number. When the UK Met Office, Met Éireann, KNMI (Netherlands), Météo-France and partners, or the German weather service give a storm an official name, the page picks it up automatically from the news and the name replaces the number. A storm keeps the same number from one update to the next. If an automatic name is wrong or late, tap RENAME on its card (changes only your own view) — or ask Matt to set it for everyone.
Worked out by computer from NOAA's GFS forecast and refreshed every 6 hours. The further ahead, the less certain the position and depth — always check Jersey Met warnings for what is actually expected here.
